Wisdom Teeth

We specialize in wisdom teeth extractions, but that's not to say that there aren't a few tips and tricks to go home with! To minimize pain, swelling and risk of infection, here are some tips that you should carefully following after having a tooth extracted:

1. Keep firm pressure on the gauze to control bleeding. The gauze should stay over the area at least a half-hour before replacing it with fresh gauze.
2. Avoid rinsing for 24 hours after the surgery. Rinsing may dislodge the blood clot and expose the underlying bone material. After 24 hours, use warm salt water rinses every few hours, especially after meals.
3. To help prevent excessive bleeding, do not spit!
4. Apply an ice pack to the area, alternate 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off.
5. Do not use (suck) on straws or cigarettes for 48 hours following the procedure. Sucking can create negative pressure and dislodge the blood clot.
6. Avoid mouthwashes (Scopeยฎ, Listerineยฎ) for at least 5 days following the procedure. These contain alcohol, which can loosen the blood clot. Should you develop a foul odour, brush your tongue with a soft toothbrush or a specialty tongue brush.
7. Avoid acidic juices with citric acid, such as orange, tomato, pineapple and grapefruit. Also avoid foods with small pieces that may end up in the sockets (rice, chips, popcorn, peanuts and others). A soft diet is recommended to minimize infection risks. Some options include soups, mashed potatoes, eggs and ice cream.
8. Give your jaw a little physiotherapy. A few days after your procedure, chew gum for a minimum of two hours.
